SAY TELL  SPEAK

Estes quatro verbos geralmente se confundem na tradução por terem significados muito parecidos. 
Vamos tentar tornar a diferença mais clara.

SAY (said,said) - Dizer, no sentido de expressar opinião, transmitir informação, opinar sobre algo.
Examples:
My mother always says to take care on the streets.
The director's secretary said to call back latter.
Why should I stop doing this? Because I said so.
You said something to me about going out tonight,remember?
He said "Good morning" to everybody.
I said to my boss that I needed an assistant yesterday

TELL (told, told)- dizer , contar,distinguir algo - contar alguma coisa para alguem, contar uma história ou uma piada.Em geral ocorre com objeto indireto.
Examples:
She always tells the same story to the kids-(com She ou He acrescenta-se "S" no presente,lembra?)
I don't like to tell lies.I hate liers.
Nobody told me about the party.
Please,tell me a good joke.
The speaker told all the news about the subject.
I want to tell you how much I like you.
I can't tell him from his brother.They are identical twins!

SPEAK (spoke, spoken)- falar,discursar,conversar - normalmente usado para idomas,ou quando uma pessoa se dirige a um grupo.
Examples:
He speaks English with a Brazilian accent.
I speak five languages but I only read three.
He didn't speak a word the whole day.
My manager spoke to us about the changes in the company.
I will speak to him about taking a new course at university.

SPEAK com sujeito plural adquire a sentido de "conversar".
Me and my girl spoke about getting married next year.
My brother and his girlfriend speak about love but not about marriage.

TALK (talked, talked)- conversar,falar  - tem um sentido muito genérico e significa-" usar a palavra para se expressar". Em geral sugere que duas ou mais pessoas estão conversando.
Examples:
My aunt talked for one hour nonstop but I didn't understand a word!
He usually talks a lot about him self. He's very self-important( presunçoso).
My baby is only six months old an doesn't talk yet.
Please call your mother.I need to talk to her right now!
If you want some more discount you'll have to talk to the manager.

NOTA: como podem perceber nem sempre a diferença é facil de notar ou explicar. Por isso é melhor treinar muito e observar como os americanos e ingleses falam (filmes em inglês podem ser uma boa dica).
Como ja dissemos mais de uma vez..."muita coisa é na base do "usa-se assim" e pronto!"

Leia o pequeno diálogo a seguir e observe o uso destes verbos.
Lembre-se que eles podem estar no presente passado ou futuro com qualquer verbo.

A short dialog -Hi Dave! How are things going? - Fine Pete, just fine. - You look a bit worried. What’s the matter? - It's my sister, I mean, her new boyfriend. - Why? Is he a bad guy or a stupid guy? -Oh no he is not bad but he is an airhead. - Yeah? But  you told he is very smart because he speaks four languages. -Well he does but he just talks a lot and doesn't say anything. -What do you mean? -Last week I asked him to tell me about his vacation in Europe and the guy wasn't able to do it. He started talking a lot of non sense mixing countries and places. He said the Eiffel Tower is in Barcelona , Spain , can you believe that? -Well, not a bright guy isn't it? - He can't even tell a joke because he always forgets the end of it. -But isn't he a rich guy? I mean he could study in the best school in the word and get good culture. - He is not interested on it. He just wants to spend his father's money traveling around the world. -Now I see why you are worried about your sister. Thinking like that he will never have a good future, right? -I tried to talk to him as a friend to open his eyes but he just said he knows what he's doing. - Well maybe he knows maybe not. Only time will tell. - And when it does I hope it says something good. - Ok. Now let's stop talking about peoples lives and let's tell some jokes to make the day happier, right? -Right. The first joke I'll tell you is about the guy who.....

Um pequeno diálogo -Oi Dave! Como vão as coisas? - Bem Pete, tudo bem. -Você parece preocupado. Qual é o problema? - É minha irmã, quer dizer o novo namorado dela. -Porque? Ele é um cara ruim ou burro? - Ah não ele não é ruim, mas é um cabeça de vento. - É? Mas você me disse que ele é esperto porque fala quatro línguas. -Bom ele fala mas ele só fala e não diz nada. - O que quer dizer? Semana passada pedi a ele para me contar sobre as férias na Europa e o cara foi incapaz de fazê-lo. Ele começou a falar um monte  de besteiras misturando paises e lugares. Ele disse que a Torre Eiffel é em Barcelona na Espanha, você acredita? - É não é um cara brilhante, né? -Ele não consegue contar uma piada porque sempre esquece o final. -Mas ele não é um cara rico? Quero dizer, ele poderia estudar na melhor escola do mundo e ter boa cultura. - Ele não esta interessado nisso. Ele só quer gastar o dinheiro do pai viajando pelo mundo. - Agora vejo porque esta preocupado com sua irmã. Pensando desse jeito ele nunca terá um bom futuro, certo? - Eu tentei falar com ele como amigo para abrir seus olhos, mas ele disse que sabe o que esta fazendo. - Bom talvez ele saiba talvez não. Só o tempo dirá. - E quando disser espero que diga algo de bom. - Ok, Vamos para de falar da vida das pessoas e contar uma piadas para deixar o dia mais feliz, certo? - Certo. A primeira piada que vou contar é sobre o cara que....
